4 Tips To Have Beautiful Flat Lay Photos In Your Wedding Gallery

You’ve seen beautiful flat lay images in photographer’s portfolios, and you’re wanting to have the same type of photos in your own wedding gallery. Below are 4 tips that will help set you up for success to have the best flat lay photos!

1. Hire a professional to design and create your invitation suite

This is so important! It is difficult to have a beautiful flat lay if your invitations are very basic. I recommend having at least the following elements to have a complete invitation suite:

  • Invitation Card
  • Details or Reception Card
  • RSVP Card

By hiring a professional, you can ensure that you have a beautiful design that fits the vibe of your wedding. They also will ensure that your invites are printed professionally, free of mistakes in print quality and etiquette.

Story Time!
Learn from my mistake: I DIY’d my own invitation suite for my wedding in April 2023. While I did save money, it was my first time doing something like that and there was a lot of headache and mistakes I made. For example, I didn’t think to put the address of where to send the RSVP card back to, so a lot of people didn’t know where to send their RSVP! Also, I didn’t realize that putting postage on the RSVP card envelope was an important etiquette rule to follow, so I feel like that left a bad first impression to my guests! Lastly, I didn’t realize how hard it was doing a wax seal on the outside of the envelope. It was a great idea, but some of the envelopes looked more like a 3rd grade art project than an elegant wedding invitation! I’m pretty sure my then-fiance and I almost got into an argument trying to do it as well! Haha!

Oh, and I didn’t know that my envelopes would all cost more to mail than just the normal forever stamp. We mailed them, already a little behind schedule, feeling relieved they were finally done. Well, about a week later, we got them all back in the mail (with a bright red stamp from the post office on my pretty purple envelopes), saying more postage was needed. We mailed them out again successfully with more postage, but man, what a headache! I’m still glad I at least tried to have pretty invites, and I still cherish the work we did and keep those invites as keepsakes from our wedding. But please learn from my mistakes!

2. Have your florist save you some flowers for the flat lay design

It’s totally ok to ask your florist to save you some extra flowers for your flat lay deign! Having real flowers can make or break a flat lay design, and I would say they’re essential to having a beautiful flat lay! So it is definitely worth reaching out to the florist to have some extra flowers. The more the merrier, but just a few blossoms and a few sprigs of greenery, plus any petals, would be ideal!

3. Mail your photographer your invitation suite before the wedding

Good things often take time, and mailing your invitation suite to your photographer allows her to take her time styling it! This would be as opposed to doing it the beginning of the wedding day. You would need to mail 1-2 invitation suites. Mail 2 invitation suites if one of the cards has both a front and back design.

With this option, I can take my time creating the flat lay design and experiment with different looks that normally I might not have time to be creative with during the chaos of a wedding day.

4. Make sure to prepare all the details you want photographed

Below is a list of the details I photograph at every wedding, and it’s normally the first thing I photograph. Having these prepared for me will help your day run more smoothly and ensure I have as much time as possible to get great shots of them!

  • dress
  • veil
  • all 3 rings
  • shoes
  • bouquet
  • earrings
  • full invitation suite
