Below are some detrimental thoughts I’ve had that have really caused me to make bad decisions, believe lies, or be discouraged.
1. You Think You’re Too Far Gone To Turn Back
You think that the train has already left the station when it hasn’t. There’s still time for you to get on…or to get off. Or maybe the train has left the station but you can still jump off and live. As long as there is breath in you, there is hope. You’re never too far gone.
2. You’re Afraid to Tell People “No”
You willingly agree to things that you feel uncomfortable doing. You don’t want to upset people and so you burden yourself with things that lead to resentment, stress, or regret. There are ways to kindly and tactfully tell people “no,” and it’s a very important skill to start growing in. Otherwise, you will be miserable for much of your life if you can’t tell people “no.”
3. You Don’t Believe in Miracles
Jesus says “ask and you will receive.” Don’t let theologians take away the weight of that phrase. Don’t let past disappointments and loss cause you to see everything through that lens alone. There is still truth to this concept.
Seek, and you will find…knock, and the door will be open. Expect that God can move mountains in your life, and believe that if you keep praying you will eventually get your answer. You never know just what tomorrow holds.
4. You Think Your Pain is Permanent
Everything changes, both the good and the bad. Some seasons of pain, grief, or loneliness last much longer than we want them to, but I’ve found that they normally do end eventually. Contrary to popular belief, I don’t think we have to wait until death to be released from most struggles. The Bible says in Psalms that David believed he would see the goodness of God in the “land of the living (Ps 27:13).” You don’t have to wait until you die to see the goodness of God – you can see it here now in the land of the living.
